Your Attorney

Nick Shigeoka

I’m Nick Shigeoka, and I am the owner of

Honolulu Family Law Office.

The Beginning

Long before I was ever an attorney, I was and still am an older brother.  My little brother, Carson, is profoundly and deeply handicapped.  While he is currently 19 years old, he is in some ways like a 5 month old, able to do little other than lie down and make sounds to let us know he is happy or uncomfortable, and he is fed through a tube that goes to his stomach.

However, despite his disabilities, or perhaps because of them, he has an almost regal quality to him.  Despite being utterly dependent on others and incapable of doing anything on his own, he is deeply loved by me and those close to him.  Carson taught me that we all have intrinsic dignity and value as human beings, and no accomplishment or failure can change that.  For what he continues to teach me, he is perhaps the finest individual I have ever met.

My Inspiration

I was inspired by Carson to work with handicapped students and had the opportunity to do so at Roosevelt High School as my first job after college.  There, I was able to meet the families of the students, and got to know these people who loved their handicapped family members very much.  I recall a moment with a parent where I was finishing up my time with the students to go to law school, and the parent thought I was already an attorney and asked if I could help.  I have kept this memory in my heart as I obtained my legal education here in Hawaii.  Looking back at things, what struck me was how many families were in need of legal services, but none of them knew where to go or who to call.

I believe people like Carson and Hawaii’s families have a need for legal services.  I feel that people deserve legal counsel who will not only advise them skillfully, but with care, as if they were immediate family.  I have seen the range of the law, how it acted both as the mechanism that brutalized my family in my parents’ five-year long divorce fought mercilessly in court, and the shield that ensures that my brother Carson will be taken care of.  Whatever the case may be, people will be best served by someone who will guide them through the process with utmost care and compassion.

And so, in a strange way, as a family law attorney, although I’ve never met you, I feel as though I know how important your family is to you.  I hope that by hearing a little bit about my life and experiences, you’ve begun to know a little about me, and I would appreciate the opportunity to know more about you.  I believe I can help you protect and care for what is most precious to you.
